"Winner of the Canberra Regional Awards for Culture"

The Snowy Mountains Horse Riders Association has held annually since 1987, a Mountain Bush Racing day which we call our Mountain Muster. This is a social gathering of mountain horsemen and women from all over the Great Divide as well as spectators from all walks of life. Being in the school holidays, we attract many tourists who are visiting our resort towns as well as car loads of competitors with their families and friends.

Our Mountain Muster is a stage for lobbying but most of all we believe a celebration of our pioneering past and the Man from Snowy River legend is reflected by the descendants of the Snowy River Riders.

Our main events are gruelling two mile cross-country mountain races, consisting of a lake crossing, obstacles and jumps, steep slopes and thick scrub ..."which well might make the boldest hold his breath".

As seen on TV's " A Big Country", "A Current Affair" and "Australia All Over", the venue for the Muster is the picturesque Lake Jillamatong, public land surrounded by private rural properties of unique and delightful landscapes with the majestic Snowy Mountains for a backdrop.

Camping is a popular option (with amenities available) at Lake Jillamatong as it is about 20 minutes drive south of Jindabyne, (follow signs).  Market stalls and activities for the young will be there as are food and refreshments available on the day and next morning.

In the evening after the day's events, a country band will be playing music from the back of a truck for dancing and festivities to be enjoyed until the wee hours.

Mountain Racing has proven to grow enormously every year with now a summer circuit which is established all around the High Country areas.

The majority of members are from rural backgrounds and are said to be some of the finest horse people around.

The Snowy Mountains Horse Riders Association have regularly donated profits to local organisations such as S.E.S., volunteer Fire Brigades, Pre-School and for sports people to compete at a high level etc as well as for lobbying in the quest to....
Keep our Heritage Alive...............

The Muster is held in January every year. For further details phone 02-64561368
