The Man from Snowy River may just ride again........

On Monday November 20, a peak Horse Riding Group including the Snowy Mountains Horse Riders Assoc, Snowy Mountains Bush Users Group and the Australian Horse Alliance (which nationally represents many of the ATHRA, Endurance and Pony Club Groups) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the NSW Liberals and Nationals about the future approach to Horse Riding in NSW, in the event that they are elected in next years March 24 state election.

So what does this mean to us and to our friends :
bulletIn essence it opens up many of those areas that have been closed off to Horse Riders for the past few decades.
bulletFor Pony Clubs and other Show Horse based organisations it means recognition of our Heritage and our "right to ride" making it harder for groups to have their Pony Club Grounds taken away, and other places where we ride.
bulletFor Endurance Riders it means that we get access back into a lot more reserve lands and national parks that were previously available.
bulletFor Trail Riding Clubs it means increased access to State forests and Wilderness areas. This means that we can visit new and exciting locations that had previously been accessible before Wilderness declarations. Some of this country has been closed to riders for 20 years.
bulletFor Pack Horse Travellers it means that Wilderness is no longer "locked up" on the basis that riding is "not self reliant" (what a nonsense to start with).
bulletFor the Brumbies it means that they are protected and recognised as part of our Heritage and that Shooting is prohibited for so-called "management".
bulletFor the Bicentennial Trail we get greater levels of protection in order that it cannot be taken away.
bulletFor our Heritage - Australian horsemen and bushmen finally get recognition as opposed to exploitation for corporate gain.
bulletFor the Snowy River Riders it means re-gaining access to ride in the "non-alpine" zones that are considered our traditional areas such as the Lower Snowy River Country and the home of the Silver Brumby books, Ingeegoodbee/Cascades as well as the Bogong Peaks, Cooleman Range and the Goobarragandra in the north.
For riders in general, we have a chance to regain access back into our beloved bush that were previously traded off by past Governments for Sydney Green Votes.

After more than 20 years the Snowy Mountains Horse Riders Assoc are delighted that the plight of our Snowy River Heritage has finally been recognised and that the blanket prohibition which took place in the early 80's, without any public consultation, has been acknowledged.  Pandering to the extremist views of city greens seems to be coming to a head, for one side of politics at least.

There are several other very important provisions and supporters are requested to promote and inform others of this historical agreement.
